It is year two of NaDEET’s EU sponsored- RUG for Sustainability project. The RUG team recently surveyed over 200 households and used the opportunity to meet with previous NaDEET Centre participants. It was refreshing to witness first-hand the use of sustainable living equipment such as Katrina Osemas from Gochas cooking on her self-made fuel efficient stove. World Conference calls for Global Commitment

Over 1000 delegates from 148 countries met in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, to celebrate the achievements of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). NaDEET was proud to be a part of this celebration. We were invited to showcase our work together with 24 other selected "ESD success stories".

The Aichi-Nagoya Conference Declaration urges all to commit to further education action in the Global Action Programmes (GAP). Our Director was given the honour to speak about NaDEET's GAP commitment during the official closing ceremony. She urged all to be role models for sustainability and for all to make their own personal commitments.

At NaDEET Centre we want visitors to learn how to live a sustainable lifestyle. Participants are divided into “Sustainable Living Teams” and share a house, dry toilet and “WaterWiseWashroom”. Here participants learn skills such as:

  • how to monitor their daily water use by reading an indicator and water meter .
  • how to wash using a bucket shower
  • how to use less water and still be clean!

After more than 10 years of the harsh desert climate and 10,000 participants, the eight WaterWiseWashrooms need to be renovated.

These remarks were made by our Gochas Community Liaison Officer, Berend Velskoen after he was awarded a SUN KING PRO solar light.  Having gone through the project for 9 months now, it is evident that participants are very keen to change their lifestyles to more sustainable practices and these lights are one the many benefits participants gains through the 2014-2016 European Union  funded action, ‘RUG for Sustainability’.
