Spending time in the outdoors and learning about the wonders of nature are key components of the NaDEET programme. Children from the Kamwandi Environmental Club recently came to NaDEET Centre during their holidays. Here one of the learners is very concentrated using our It's Time to Identify guide during field work.
During April almost 60 teachers gathered at NaDEET Centre in three separate workshops to translate NaDEET's popular pre-primary booklet pack "It's Time to Grow" into Namibian languages. Penduka, meaning "Wake up!" is the theme of one of the new Sun booklet poem. The other booklets are Water, Animals & Plants and Recycling. This project aims to improve Quality Education in Namibia through the promotion of indigenous languages and of course the environment. Teachers at the workshop- as with all of our participants- solar cooked, saved water and explored the Namib. Many remarked it was the best professional development training they had ever attended as it really taught them new practical skills that they can use in their work and at home!
The importance of outdoor, experiential learning was one of the key messages during this UNESCO conference in Ottawa, Canada. Together with ESD practitioners from Southern Africa, Viktoria Keding, debated important elements to prepare African teachers for engaging learners with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Read more about the conference here. NaDEET is a UNESCO Key Partner for the Global Action Programme on ESD.
NaDEET's Director, Viktoria Keding, was awarded with the 2017 Trophee de Femmes Environmental Woman of Year (Germany) by the Yves Rocher Fondation in Stuttgart, Germany on the 15th February. This prestigious award is given to women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the environment. For more information please visit Yves Rocher Trophee de Femmes.
"Hey, it works! The sun is cooking our food." Schoolchildren from Windhoek are discovering first hand that solar cooking really works and that the food is delicious. For NaDEET Centre it is modus operandi every week. For each week long programme we cook every lunch and dinner on our solar cookers as part of our "we practice what we teach" philosophy.
On Monday 31 October NaDEET hosted a special evening celebration at their Centre to mark the end of the three year RUG for Sustainability action.
Representatives from the schools and communities of Rietoog, Uibes and Gochas, as well as the main donor, the European Union attended. Whilst we were thrilled to celebrate our achievements, it was also sad to say good bye to the people we have worked with so closely for three years. We hope they will keep NaDEET’s vision in their hearts and carry the torch that we have lit together into the future, thus ensuring a more sustainable planet for us all.
