August 2018

Biking for NaDEET

A group of 19 students from Willy Brandt Gymnasium in Oer-Erkenschwick, Germany, are in Namibia for a bike tour to raise funds for NaDEET. Led by their school principal and NaDEET’s technical director, the group will cover a distance of over 500km in 7 days to cycle from Windhoek via the Khomas Hochland through NamibRand to reach NaDEET Centre. There they will spend a week learning about sustainability and the Namib together with one of our partner schools, WJD Cloete JSS. Listen to the radio programme from WDR in German.

We have a new solar deck

The solar deck at NaDEET Centre is one of our key components to educating our visitors about solar cooking. With a kind donation from the Speich Education Fund the old solar deck has been replaced with a beautiful and extended deck that will allow us to work effectively. The solar deck was last renovated 8 years ago and is made from invasive Prosopis wood.

Viktoria receives 2018 Common Good Award

We are proud to announce that our Director received the Common Good Award from her alma mater Bowdoin College in Maine, USA. This award recognises her dedication to environmental education in Namibia through her “extraordinary, profound, and sustained commitment to the common good, in the interest of society, with conspicuous disregard for personal gain in wealth or status”. Looking into the future of ESD

Key partners of the Global Action Programme including NaDEET met to discuss the future of ESD after the GAP framework that ends in 2019. At the meeting that was held at the Earth Charter Headquarters in Costa Rica, Viktoria networking with regional and international UNESCO staff.

NaDEET Celebrates Independence

School kids came up with new and exciting ideas on how to deal with environmental problems and how to develop a sustainable future for Namibia during the Super Adapted Namibia game. The game was part of NaDEET’s Independence celebrations aimed at stimulating thought towards environmental sustainability.

Teaching Sustainability

Visits to NaDEET Centre for 2018 have started and with renewed energy the activities at the Centre are going well. NUST intern and kitchen educator assistant Tuwilika demonstrated how a solar oven works to the Origo Primary School learners before they solar cooked their own meals.
